Salvatore The Shoemaker of Dreams Luca Guadagnino: the official trailer
Salvatore – The Shoemaker of Dreams it tells an exciting human, artistic and entrepreneurial story, enriched by the narrative voice of the actor Michael Stuhlbarg and from unpublished images and unique testimonies that see among the protagonists, alongside members of the Ferragamo family, the director Martin Scorsese, the costume designer Deborah Nadoolman Landis, and numerous scholars, teachers, stylists, journalists, fashion and film critics.
The voice of Salvatore Ferragamo is not lacking in the docufilm: in fact there are period recordings, restored for the occasion, of radio interviews released in Australia and some chapters of his autobiography narrated by Ferragamo himself. From the extraordinary passion for footwear in Naples to the trip to America animated by the desire to explore new challenges, from life stories in Hollywood, to his return to Italy, the result of an exceptional intuition to establish production in Florence, from the risk of bankruptcy to the rebirth in his workshop in Florence until the definitive consecration and entrepreneurial success: Salvatore – Il Calzolaio dei Sogni shows the mystery and charm of a complex figure, an icon of Italian and world fashion who has never lost sight of the importance of family ties.
Written by the fashion journalist and author Dana Thomas and presented out of competition at the 77th Venice International Film Festival, Salvatore – Il Calzolaio dei Sogni uses the photography of Clarissa Cappellani and Massimiliano Kuveiller and the editing by Walter Fasano, who finds director Luca Guadagnino after the success of Call me with your name and Suspiria. The docufilm is produced by Francesco Melzi d’Eril and Gabriele Moratti for MeMo Films and by Stella Savino as executive producer.
The project came to life in 2017 when, inspired by reading the autobiography of the Italian shoemaker and entrepreneur, the director Luca Guadagnino contacted the Ferragamo family. A three-year journey in which the Salvatore Ferragamo Foundation and Museum worked alongside the director and screenwriter Dana Thomas, providing historical skills and knowledge. Of central importance is the
Ferragamo family which gave the director Luca Guadagnino the opportunity to access the brand’s archives which contained interviews, anecdotes and unpublished information as well as the latest and precious testimonies of Wanda Miletti, Salvatore’s wife.
“This is my whole life’s work: learning how to make perfect shoes, refusing to put my name on the ones that aren’t. So please, beyond the story of the barefoot and ignorant boy who became a famous shoemaker, focus your attention on the pleasure that comes from walking well “. Thus closes the preface of Salvatore Ferragamo’s autobiography that prompted Luca Guadagnino to approach this project. The director states: “What is genius? How is a system born, be it cinema or fashion? And how does the furious obsession of a constant search for ideas and creation fit with tradition and family values? Salvatore Ferragamo (1898-1960), protagonist and witness of the twentieth century, is the answer to these questions “.
“For my whole family there is a great desire to be able to share with the public the unique story of my father’s life and ours. In fact, we hope that this true story, strengthened by the special representation of Luca Guadagnino, will be a source of inspiration for many, especially for the new generations so eager for authentic ideals ”, says Leonardo Ferragamo, President of the Maison and son of Salvatore.
