” The government is losing the battle of public opinion notes Frédéric Dabi, managing director of the IFOP, as confirmed by the Institute’s monthly barometer in January, the first wave of which was carried out after the announcement of the reform by the Prime Minister, Élisabeth Borne , and the second concomitant with the mobilization day, Thursday. With 34% of the French satisfied with his performance (-2 in a month) and 65% dissatisfied (+ 3), Emmanuel Macron has effectively fallen to his lowest level of popularity since February 2020, it is say, just before the first confinement. .
For three years, the Head of State has remained relatively stable, around 40% satisfied. Now it’s over, diagnoses Frédéric Dabi: “ He seemed protected by a kind of glass, and did not pay for his actions or his statements, however clumsy. There, it is the beginning of a new period. In detail, Emmanuel Macron is now in the minority in every category without exception. Its best scores are recorded among those over 65 (40% satisfied) and retirees (39%). It remains very low among 50-64 year olds (31%), the age group that will be most quickly affected by the pension reform, and drops 10 points among 25-34 year olds (29%). It recorded its lowest score among manual workers (25%), lost 7 points among public sector employees (28%), 15 among the unemployed (23%)… But also 14 among managers (37%) and 9 among business leaders. (30%).
Pension reform predominates
The only – and meager – reason for consolation: his base withstands the shock, since 87% of his voters last April are still satisfied. However, he only wins 2 points among LR supporters (45%), whom he has convinced more of in the past. And they fall hard among EELVs (from 34 to 26%) after the controversy over their December 31 wishes and their remarks about the predictability of “ the climate crisis “. But if the question of purchasing power still worries the French, it is the pension reform that dominates their comments. While the doubt about its merits and its necessity persists, not a word, or hardly about the advanced advantages for the executive, the small pensions or the penalty for example. The proof that the government’s arguments have not convinced, and that the deficit of ” pedagogy pointed out by some in the majority is real.
” Work harder to earn less », cruelly sums up one of the French people questioned. As for the method, it is about forced step “, from ” brutality “, from ” lack of dialogue and 49-3. A criticism that hits hard at the head of government, who registers 64% dissatisfaction (+5). Frédéric Dabi’s final verdict: “ a very bad wave, in which we do not see any element of rebound. »
