Brazil: Jair Bolsonaro, target of the investigation into the attack in Brasilia, a former minister arrested

The images strongly recall the takeover of the Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump in 2021. On Sunday, January 8, a week after the inauguration of Brazil’s new, left-wing president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva , hundreds of supporters of Jair Bolsonaro have demonstrated. his discontent with violence. Gathered in front of the Congress in Brasília, they managed to cross the security barriers despite the intervention of the police. Supporters quickly stormed this historic building that houses the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, whose relatives have already been implicated, is now himself the target of justice for his role in the looting of national institutions in Brasilia, AFP underlines.

Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes announced on Friday that he is including the extreme right-wing ex-head of state in his investigation, as requested by the prosecution. The objective is clear: to discover the possible instigators of the violence.

“A public incitement to the commission of a crime”

According to the attorney general behind this request, Jair Bolsonaro “He carried out a public incitement to execution of a crime”, we can read in his press release. Because the former president released a video on social media “Challenging the regularity of the 2022 presidential election”.

This video was published two days after the invasion of the headquarters of the presidency, Congress and the Supreme Court by thousands of Bolsonaro supporters, then deleted, the prosecutor’s office recalled. But she could, according to him, carry “evidence link” justifying “a global investigation into the events before and after January 8, 2023” by Jair Bolsonaro.

Therefore, this former minister is the subject of an arrest warrant “collision” alleged with the perpetrators of the violence in Brasília.

The three-page document found at his home called for the federal government to take control of the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE), which oversees the proper functioning of the voting, “Guarantee the preservation and restoration of transparency, and approve the regularity of the electoral process for the 2022 presidential elections”. “While 33 million people were starving, they were preparing a coup”left-wing senator Randolfe Rodrigues, leader of the Lula government’s parliamentary bloc in the upper house, tweeted on Friday.
